An overview of my journey

I began my career as a teacher before developing a project bringing education and youthwork together to help marginalised young people cope better in the education system.  This project was an initiative of the Government and the Princes Trust in partnership with a new joint-churches community project in Cambridge called Romsey Mill that I helped to establish and develop, building teams to tackle the various opportunities that arose.

I led a number of projects through Romsey Mill to help young people step up and invest their skills in new ventures including a roadshow, an alcohol-free bar and a new model of small-group support and challenge. Whilst at Romsey Mill, I completed my journey towards ordained ministry in the Church of England and began serving as a self-supporting priest alongside my charity development work.

I then moved to Cumbria to help a group of courageous investors develop The Kepplewray Project, a fully inclusive education & activity centre for disabled and non-disabled people together. I recruited and led a number of teams to work together to provide a radical adventure provision for those unable to access the opportunities afforded to others.

In 2000, I accepted the invitation to become the Vicar of St Thomas’ Church in Kendal and brought my team development experience into a local church keen to develop better community connection and enable more people to benefit from the whole-life opportunities offered by a vibrant local church.  Following a mission-community growth project pioneered with a number of small rural churches to the north of Kendal, I joined the senior team of Carlisle diocese to help roll-out the mission communities strategy across Cumbria .

In 2015, I joined Liverpool Diocese to lead one of the first strategic development projects of the Church of England looking to transform the mission strength of the deanery of Wigan. The Transforming Wigan project established the new Church Wigan with a radical growth culture forming a new ‘hub-and-spoke’ structure around clergy and lay leaders and teams focused on refreshing existing and planting new worship communities.

In 2020 I joined the project team for Liverpool Diocese’s Fit for Mission transformation initiative and headed up the coaching team to come alongside the leaders and teams as they journeyed through the change programme. In 2024 I began coaching leaders and teams in other dioceses and organisations stepping into significant transformational growth programmes. I now focus my coaching on courageous individuals who want to explore significant change for themselves as well as with bold leaders and teams tackling transformational change in their unique context.
